〜ようになる — “come to / start to (a change)”

JLPT N4 Verbs & Politeness

Gradual change of state or ability: 話せるようになった

Plain form + ようになる marks a change over time, often a newly-gained ability or habit: 日本語が話せるようになりました (I've become able to speak Japanese). It's the grammar of progress — perfect for describing how far you've come.

How to form it

PatternExample
Potential verb + ようになる読める → 読めるようになる — become able to read
Plain verb + ようになる野菜を食べるようになった — came to eat vegetables

Watch out

ようになる is about change, so it pairs naturally with potential verbs and new habits. For a one-time decision to start doing something (“I decided to study every day”), the related 〜ことにする fits better.
