Dakuten & handakuten (゛/ ゜)

Two small marks change the consonant: か ka → が ga, は ha → ば ba / ぱ pa.

Combination sounds (yōon)

A small ゃ/ゅ/ょ after an -i kana blends into one syllable: き + ゃ = きゃ kya.

Reading tips

Small っ doubles the next consonant (きって kitte, "stamp"). In katakana, a long dash ー stretches the vowel (コーヒー kōhī). Particles は, へ and を are read wa, e and o. Ready? Switch to the katakana chart or take the quiz.
