Grammar › Purpose & Perspective
ように — “so that…” (purpose)
States a goal you're arranging conditions to reach — often with potential-form verbs
A dictionary-form or nai-form verb (not a volitional one) + ように sets up a goal you're shaping circumstances to achieve — “(in order) that X happens.” It's especially common with potential verbs (聞こえるように — so that it can be heard) and the request 〜ようにしてください (please make sure to).
How to form it
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Dictionary/nai potential + ように | みんなに聞こえるように話してください — Please speak so everyone can hear |
| Reminder form | 忘れないようにしてください — Please make sure you don't forget |

Watch out
Purpose ように needs a verb you don't directly control (potential, nai-form, or another person's action) — for a goal you personally intend to actively do, ために is used instead: 合格するために勉強する (I study in order to pass), not 合格するように勉強する.
