〜と — “whenever / if” (natural consequences)

JLPT N4 Conditionals

Automatic results: 押すと開く — press it and it opens

Plain form + expresses an automatic, always-true result: このボタンを押すと、ドアが開く (press this button and the door opens). It's the conditional of machines, directions and natural laws — “when A happens, B inevitably follows”.

How to form it

PatternExample
Plain non-past + と右に曲がると、駅があります — turn right and there's the station
Negative + と急がないと、遅れる — if we don't hurry, we'll be late

Watch out

The result clause of と can't be a command, request or invitation — ×駅に着くと、電話してください is wrong (use たら there). と is for facts and inevitabilities, not for asking someone to do something.
