〜ば — “if” (hypothetical condition)

JLPT N4 Conditionals

Provided that X: 安ければ買う — if it's cheap, I'll buy it

The conditional focuses on the condition itself — “if (and only if) X, then Y”. It's common in set phrases and advice (〜すればいい = you should just do ~). い-adjectives make it easily: 安い → 安ければ.

How to form it

PatternExample
う-verbs: う-row → え-row + ば行く → 行けば / 飲む → 飲めば
る-verbs: る → れば食べる → 食べれば
い-adj: い → ければ安い → 安ければ / いい → よければ
Negative: 〜なければ行かない → 行かなければ

Watch out

ば leans toward the condition being uncertain or general; it's slightly stiffer than たら. The pattern 〜ばよかった (should have done) is a high-value idiom: 行けばよかった — I wish I'd gone.
