〜にわたって — “over the span of, throughout”

JLPT N2 Extent & Frequency

A long stretch of time or space: 10年にわたって — over the course of 10 years

Noun (duration, distance, or scope) + にわたって emphasizes that something continues, unbroken, across a notably long or wide range — “throughout X” or “over the span of X.” The adjectival form 〜にわたる modifies a following noun directly.

How to form it

PatternExample
Duration/scope + にわたって10年にわたって — over the course of 10 years
Duration/scope + にわたる + noun長期にわたる工事 — construction spanning a long period

Watch out

にわたって is reserved for genuinely long or extensive spans — using it for a short, ordinary duration (“for three minutes”) sounds oddly grandiose.
