〜に反して — “contrary to”

The opposite of what was expected: 予想に反して、試合に勝った — contrary to expectations, we won

Noun + に反して states that reality turned out to be the opposite of a stated expectation, prediction, or wish — “contrary to X.” The related adjectival form 〜に反する is used to directly modify a noun.

Watch out

に反して needs a noun expressing an expectation or standard (予想, 期待, 規則) — it can't attach directly to a plain verb or adjective clause the way のに can.
