〜前に / 〜後で — “before” and “after”

JLPT N5 Timing & Sequence

Sequencing two events: 寝る前に歯を磨きます — I brush my teeth before sleeping

Dictionary form + 前に means “before doing X”; た-form + 後で means “after doing X.” Note the tense: 前に always follows the dictionary form even when the whole sentence is in the past, while 後で always follows the past-tense た-form.

How to form it

PatternExample
Dictionary form + 前に寝る前に、歯を磨きます — I brush my teeth before sleeping
た-form + 後で食べた後で、薬を飲みます — I take medicine after eating
Noun + の前に / の後で食事の前に手を洗う — wash hands before the meal

Watch out

前に keeps the dictionary form even in a past-tense sentence (寝た前に is wrong; 寝る前に is correct) — only 後で switches to the past た-form.
