かのようだ — “as if, as though”
A literary way to describe something that only seems or resembles being true
Plain form + かのようだ (often かのように when modifying a verb) describes something that gives the strong impression of being true, without actually being so — “as if it were X.” It's more literary and vivid than plain ようだ, common in descriptive writing.
How to form it

Watch out
かのようだ almost always pairs with まるで (“just like”) for emphasis in natural speech — dropping まるで doesn't break the grammar, but adding it makes the simile land much more vividly.
