Negating adjectives — 〜くない and 〜じゃない
い-adjectives and な-adjectives negate differently: 高くない vs 静かじゃない
い-adjectives drop the final い and add くない: 高い → 高くない. な-adjectives negate the same way nouns do, with じゃない (casual) or じゃありません (polite): 静か → 静かじゃない. Mixing the two patterns up is one of the most common early mistakes.
How to form it
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| い-adjective: drop い, add くない | 高い → 高くない — not expensive/tall |
| な-adjective: + じゃない / じゃありません | 静か → 静かじゃない / 静かじゃありません — not quiet |
| Exception: いい → よくない | いい → よくない — not good (irregular stem) |

Watch out
いい (good) is irregular: its negative isn't いくない but よくない, built from the older stem よ-. Every other regular い-adjective just drops い and adds くない.
