〜じゃない / ではありません — negative of です

JLPT N5 Verbs & Politeness

Saying “is not”: 学生じゃない / 学生ではありません — (I'm) not a student

To negate です, swap it for じゃない (casual) or ではありません (polite). じゃありません is a slightly softer polite option too. ではない/ではありません is a touch more formal-sounding than じゃない/じゃありません, which are the everyday spoken defaults.

How to form it

PatternExample
Noun/na-adj + じゃない (casual)学生じゃない — not a student
Noun/na-adj + じゃありません (polite)学生じゃありません — not a student
Noun/na-adj + ではありません (more formal)学生ではありません — not a student

Watch out

じゃない is casual, so tacking on です (じゃないです) to make it polite is a common but slightly informal-sounding shortcut — じゃありません is the cleaner, textbook-correct polite form.
