〜続ける / 〜終わる — “keep on doing” / “finish doing”

JLPT N4 Core Patterns

Compound verbs marking duration: 話し続ける — keep on talking / 話し終わる — finish talking

Attaching 続ける (continue) or 終わる (finish) directly to a verb's ます-stem creates a compound verb describing the ongoing or completed nature of the action — no て-form needed, unlike many other aspect patterns.

How to form it

PatternExample
ます-stem + 続ける話す → 話し続ける — to keep on talking
ます-stem + 終わる話す → 話し終わる — to finish talking

Watch out

These attach to the ます-stem (話し, 書き), not the て-form or dictionary form — a common slip is trying 話して続ける or 話す続ける instead of the correct 話し続ける.
