〜にあたって / 〜にあたり — “on the occasion of, in preparing for”
Marking a significant moment: 新生活を始めるにあたって — as I begin my new life
Noun/dictionary form + にあたって (or the more formal-written にあたり) marks a significant, often once-in-a-while occasion and introduces what one does in preparation for or in response to it — “on the occasion of X” or “in preparing for X.” It's reserved for notable turning points, not everyday moments.

Watch out
にあたって is reserved for genuinely significant occasions (starting a job, graduating, signing a contract) — using it for a routine, everyday moment (“in preparing to eat lunch”) sounds needlessly grand.
